The department of popular music offers a two-year full-time education in popular music performance, songwriting, recording and theory. The students will develop their musicianship, and gain competence in project-oriented ensembles, concerts, and studio work. The students will develop an understanding of popular music’s function in society, both in historical and contemporary cultures. The students will further gain knowledge about the music industry and various related fields of businesses. The period of study will stimulate critical reflection and creativity, and serve as a training ground for the musical craft and professional skills.
The department of popular music offers a 2 year full-time education in popular music, focusing on performance, songwriting and production, training students for sustainable employment and entrepreneurship in music. The department has excisted since 1995, and the course is from 2011 a degree course, to be extended into a 3 year BMus degree course in 2013.
Our regular staff has a background in various fields of the music industry, and broad experience in their field of expertise. With their practical experience and educational background they add relevant cutting-edge competence to the education. We see it as one of our foremost tasks to create an inspiring and developing environment which gives both personal and educational development to every single student.
Upon completion of the program, the candidates will:
Knowledge
Possess a broad knowledge of key issues, theories, problems, working processes, tools and methods in popular music as creative and performing art as well as knowledge of research and development work
within the field of popular music in theory and music production as artistic practice. Also show knowledge of the distinctiveness of popular music, the history, tradition, and position as an artistic
expression in society, show broad knowledge of the music industry and different career opportunities in popular music and be able update his/her knowledge within the field of expertise.
Skills
Utilize various musical tools, techniques and forms of expression and show performative and/or creative skills, and be able to use creativity,
technology and tools of the trade to develop his/her unique form of expression. Be able to relate to different musical formats, genres and contexts, including utilize
knowledge and relevant results from research and development on practical and theoretical issues and make informed choices. Finding, evaluating,
and referring to information and technical material and present it so that it highlights a practical / theoretical question, and reflect on the aesthetic choices in both of others and his own musical practice, and develop this under guidance.
Competence
Participate in, plan and carry out varied tasks and projects that extend over time, alone and in groups, including the exchange of views and experiences with others with a background in the field and thereby
contribute to the development of good practice. Recognize innovation and innovation processes in music production, and be able to participate in such and mediating popular music both auditory,
practical, written and oral and be able to combine knowledge about music production theory, method and practice, with specialist expertise, personal experiences and musical influences to help in the artistic
development. Demonstrate knowledge of relevant practical and ethical issues, such as self-employed, employee or contractor.

Cross-educational Collaboration
With more than 700 fulltime students and an equal amount of short-term students a year, Nordic Institute of Stage and Studio (NISS) is one of Scandinavia’s largest training centers within stage, studio, film and art education. Students at NISS are given unique opportunities to participate in various forms of projects and collaborations with students from other departments.
